“The authors of the mix are Sean Canty and Miles Whittaker, a British experimental electronic music duo who sculpts obscure masterworks under the metaphorical Demdike Stare moniker (Demdike was the most famous of the Pendle witches). Successfully debuted in the 2009 with an enigmatic album named “Symbiosis”, a project effectively continued to impress die-hard music lovers with their expressive sound collages. Remaining loyal to the prolific Modern Love record label, Demdike Stare has now released 5 critically acclaimed albums and numerous singles. Their occult soundtracks are based on gloomy ambiance, penetrating melodic cuts and abyssal rhythm textures that are often enriched with fragments of world music. However, their 2013 “Testpressing” vinyl’s trilogy examines much wider palette of sounds ranging from jungle, deep house style beats to industrial, noise motives. Accompanied by Andy Votel‘s (Finders Keepers Records) symbolic artworks and suggestive visuals from retro horror or surrealistic movies, Demdike Stare keeps a well-balanced stylistic integrity. Plugged in: Basic Channel
Basic Channel is Moritz Von Oswald and Mark Ernestus and make what I suppose is called “Dub Techno”. I was turned onto them a few years ago after reading a Panda Bear interview where he mentioned them. It’s German music and it probably helped that I was living in Leipzig when I first heard them.
Have a listen and if you find a better soundtrack to grey, rainy, tramlines and concrete please let me know.
Obviously it’s very dub influenced. (On a side note I’m suspicious of anyone who doesn’t like dub, paticularly musicians.)
Following on from this influence the Basic Channel duo release tracks as Rhythm & Sound on the Burial Mix label it’s all great dubby techno with a huge influence from reggae and roots, cool cool stuff.
I love how they can produce and release music as Rhythm and Sound and do a Basic Channel reshape. Great mix below with Rhythm and Sound tracks that heavily feature vocals.

I’ve seen this guy play with both Lambchop and The Silver Jews, but sadly never solo I’ll have to remedy that. He has 2 great solo albums under his belt 2010’s Behold the Spirit and 2013’s Impossible Truth.
He is the same age as myself… man I wish i had his skills on the guitar. I wonder what his recording set up is.
His website is fairly regularly updated and he seems to be doing it himself which is cool. Check it out.
